Head to the mountain village of Bac Ha to visit the local tribal market on Sunday. This is a great tour for those who want to combine their sightseeing with some souvenir shopping. The market is a meeting point for the various cultures such as the Dzao, H’Mong and Nung tribes living in this region, and it is here that you can see locals displaying traditional handicrafts, produce and animals. Then, head to Ban Pho settlement, home to the Flower Hmong tribe and sample some of their local traditional corn wine. On the way back head to a local castle and have a quick visit with a Tay family. To finish up you will take a leisurely boat trip.

On arrival at the train station in Lao Cai you will be met by your guide and taken for a hearty breakfast in a local diner. Then we head to the Bac Ha market, a journey that takes just over 1.5 hours ( (110km / 2.5 hours from Sapa, or 72km / 1.5 hours from Lao Cai).

Stroll at your leisure in the market, viewing the locals handicrafts and produce and taking in the vibrant atmosphere as a melting pot of cultures converge to sell their wares. The Bac Ha market is the region’s biggest, and is a great place to take in the vibe. You will finish up your time in the town with your midday meal, served in a local eatery.

Departing the market area we take a tour of the old castle built by the king of the Hmong tribe at the beginning of the 20th century, then head on to see the Ban Pho settlement, home to the flower Hmong tribe. Take a tour of the village, learning about the tribe’s day-to-day lives and culture, before sampling some of their home made wines. Then your transfer will take you back to Sapa.

Following the market and lunch we head on to Lao Cai (a thirty minute drive away). On the way we take a break and visit Trung Do hamlet – home to the Tay tribe – where we stop for a drink of tea with the locals and then take a relaxing boat journey along the River Chay. We disembark at another settlement where you will board your transfer for the return to Sapa.

Note : You are advised to start early in order to see the best of the market which opens around 7.30am and finish at mid afternoon.
